Fireworks Over Manhattan: The best rooftop views in the city
Some summer nights stay with you forever. The Fourth of July in New York City is one of those nights. Watching the fireworks like the locals do – from a rooftop high above the city streets — is an iconic, “only in NY” experience. You can sip cocktails, spy skyline views, and enjoy peak summer with fireworks lighting up the night.
Whether you’re in the city for business, extending a work trip into the holiday weekend, or planning a summer getaway, a stay at Hotel 48LEX puts you within easy reach of the city’s best spots to watch the colors burst.
Rooftops, river views, and fireworks
Each year, the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks transform the Manhattan skyline into a citywide celebration. Official viewing locations are typically announced closer to the holiday, but East River vantage points throughout Manhattan are among the most sought-after places for fireworks spotting.
The Fourth of July this year is extra special since it’s America’s 250th birthday, with plenty of opportunities to explore patriotic sights and sounds during your stay.
View our curated list of our favorite rooftop bars and restaurants with spectacular views on the menu. Of course, no rooftop can claim a “guaranteed” fireworks view until Macy’s officially confirms launch locations, so be sure to check closer to the 4th.
For a party atmosphere
Elsie Rooftop
1412 Broadway, Bryant Park
Head towards Bryant Park and ascend to Elsie Rooftop for vintage-inspired interiors and panoramic city views. Cocktails arrive chilled (thankfully, on a hot day), and the skyline stretches out in every direction. On the Fourth, it’s a party with dancing, drinks, and a DJ. Step out onto the terrace to take in the spectacle when the fireworks blast off. You can balance your time between seated and open areas. Dive into the center of the action to dance the night away, or find a casual spot to take in the city skyline and the fireworks painting the sky. Heads up: the “Rooftop NYC 4th of July Party” requires tickets to attend.
1150 Broadway, Flatiron
It’s named after its address, but the entrance is actually located at 1150 Broadway. One of the largest rooftop destinations in the city, 230 Fifth is iconic. The open-air terrace frames the Empire State Building in dramatic fashion, making it especially memorable at sunset. The atmosphere is unmistakably New York in summer: energetic, social, and filled with visitors and locals enjoying a Manhattan summer night. It’s perfect for groups who want space, views, and a classic July 4th rooftop experience. Partygoers can enjoy live music, cocktails from the bar, and a full menu available for purchase. Online tickets are sold out, but you can buy them at the door for $40. “Skip the line” tickets are available on Friday and Saturday nights.
For views worth bragging about
30 Hudson Yards
Imagine seeing the fireworks from 1,100 feet in the air, with 360-degree views of the entire city. As the fireworks begin to streak across the sky, you’ll feel like they were launched just for you. With indoor and outdoor viewing decks, The Edge is a totally unique, totally New York experience. You can toast from the sky-high champagne bar and enjoy small bites like waffles and hot dogs. The heights are steep and so is the price for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, starting at $400. Be sure to buy your tickets for this high-flying event in advance. Pro-tip: Book a ticket before sunset and linger until the fireworks show begins.
The Rooftop at Pier 17
89 South Street, the Seaport
The Rooftop at Pier 17 is one of NYC’s most coveted Fourth of July viewing spots. An open-air rooftop, it boasts one of the best views in the city because you are right by the East River, where the Macy’s fireworks are launched from floating barges. A front-row seat to the fireworks is in high demand, so don’t expect to stroll in last-minute. In recent years, access to the Seaport viewing areas has required timed-entry tickets, while rooftop parties and dining experiences typically sell out well in advance. For more information about July 4th, watch the Rooftop’s calendar.
For dinner and a (fireworks) show
Dear Irving on Hudson Rooftop Bar
310 West 40th Street, 40th & 41st Floor, inside Aliz Hotel Times Square
Located in Midtown, Dear Irving feels suspended between old New York glamour and the modern skyline beyond it. The cocktails are refined, the atmosphere is intimate, and the panoramic views are especially striking as the fireworks light up the night. An open-air rooftop lounge offers a premier vantage point for viewing. Start early and enjoy light bites, like crispy goat cheese croquettes and lobster rolls. Sip inventive takes on classic NY cocktails like the Dear G&T or the Parlor Old Fashioned. Get comfy, and you’ll be in prime position to watch the fireworks when they start around 9:20 pm.
Fornio
Brooklyn Bridge Park, near Pier 6
For a more relaxed vibe, with good food and prime fireworks spotting, try Fornio. Gather with friends at the annual Ultimate 4th of July Pizza Party on Fornio’s Pier 6 rooftop. The $65 ticket price includes 2.5-hour seating, wood-fired pizzas, antipasto, desserts, and a cash bar. Brooklyn is one of the best places to view the Macy’s fireworks without skyscrapers blocking the way. You might even see a glimpse of Coney Island’s and New Jersey's fireworks, too. Stepping a little outside of Manhattan lets you really see and appreciate its striking beauty.
