Winter held on this year. But, like clockwork, when March rolls around in Manhattan, the midwinter mood lifts. The sidewalk snow melts away, wool coats give way to trenches, and the light of late afternoon hits the Chrysler Building just right, shimmering gold on silver steel for a few brief, magical minutes.

This is the season of emergence. And in New York, spring doesn’t begin with a forecast. It begins with the sound of drums on Fifth Avenue, the first signal that the city is ready to step back outside.

One week it’s bagpipes and brass bands, the next it’s floral sculptures that spill onto Herald Square. Sitting between them is Hotel 48LEX New York, your very own glass-wrapped pied-à-terre that looks out to a city in bloom. Check in and head out to these iconic March events in New York City.

The Parade on Fifth: A Tradition in Green

On St. Patrick’s Day, a few blocks west from the hotel, Fifth Avenue is awash in emerald.

The NYC Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is a ritual older than the city’s grid, stitched into every step from 44th Street to 79th. Bagpipes, Gaelic societies, FDNY flags, and Irish stepdancers all strut past the famous St. Patrick’s Cathedral in a vibrant wave of green, 150,000 marchers strong.

Spend the morning posted at 50th, coffee in hand, watching kilts flutter in the wind or a man in a leprechaun suit race toward his first pint. Then, slip off the route for a cold Guinness at The Perfect Pint on 45th, or an Irish coffee at Connolly’s, where the cream floats just right. If you’re hungry, the corned beef hash at Langan’s comes crisped on the edges, flecked with just enough onion. Or head to Molly’s Shebeen, a historic Irish pub dating back to 1895, where the shepherd’s pie arrives bubbling beside a wood-burning fireplace.

Immersive Shopping: The Macy’s Flower Show

Just as the green confetti is swept off the curbs, the city trades Guinness for gardenias, and Herald Square becomes a kaleidoscope of color.

Back for its 51st year, the Macy’s Flower Show transforms the legacy department store into a surrealist dreamscape, draping hyacinth and citrus blossoms with artworks larger than life. Windows burst with tulips and Swarovski crystals. There’s a dragonfly sculpture the size of a Vespa. A beanstalk twisting through escalators. No one tells you how weird and wonderful it is to smell jasmine three feet from a shoe display. But the point isn’t to make sense. It’s meant to break winter’s grip.

The displays are wild, oddly serene, and free for all ages to enjoy. It’s also a short walk from our hotel, if you don’t mind a scenic stroll through Bryant Park. Save some time to shop while you wander the annual show – Macy’s offers special deals each day, and limited-edition items from coveted brands.

Your Pied-à-Terre Between the Parades and Petals

At Hotel 48LEX, spring is even more beautiful from the perch of our polished Salons, spacious guestrooms and suites that feel more like glamorous apartments, complete with Spanish marble, kitchenettes, and floor-to-ceiling windows that look over the city. This is the height of residential luxury: the ease of your own Manhattan suite in the center of the city’s most iconic moments.

Curl up with a cup of tea on a private terrace, or find your next read from our hotel’s lending library. When the streets hum below with parades and pageantry, there’s something special about returning to your corner above it all.
